Like the California Zephyr, the Coast Starlight uses massive Superliner cars and features a stunning Sightseer Lounge car with floor-to-ceiling windows, open to all passengers.

Coach Class

A highly cost-effective way to travel the West Coast. Coach seats are wide, forward-facing, and feature deep recline and fold-down tray tables. Passengers share restrooms on the lower level. While Coach tickets do not include meals, guests can buy snacks, sandwiches, and beverages from the Cafe Car located on the lower level of the Sightseer Lounge.

Roomettes & Bedrooms (Sleeper Service)

For overnight comfort, Sleeper cars are the way to go. Roomettes offer a private space for two with facing seats that convert to bunks, alongside access to shared showers. Bedrooms provide more floor space, a wider lower bed, and a private enclosed toilet and shower. Upgrading to a Sleeper car comes with a major perk: complimentary “Traditional Dining,” featuring hot, chef-prepared meals in the Dining Car.

Major 2026 Warning: Because you must navigate narrow corridors and steep stairs on the double-decker Superliner trains, bringing massive suitcases to your seat or Roomette is highly discouraged.

Which side of the train is best for views?

If you are traveling southbound (from Seattle to LA), try to secure a seat on the right side of the train (facing forward). This will give you the best views of the Puget Sound, Mount Shasta, and the Pacific Ocean coastline.

Can Coach passengers use the Dining Car?

Currently, Traditional Dining is included for Sleeper car passengers. Coach passengers may be invited to make reservations and purchase meals in the Dining Car if there is leftover capacity, but it is not guaranteed.

Is the Coast Starlight wheelchair accessible?

Yes. Both Coach and Sleeper classes offer accessible seating and accessible bedrooms on the lower levels of the Superliner cars. However, because the Sightseer Lounge and Dining cars are located on the upper level, meals can be brought directly to your lower-level seat by the train staff.
