Operating six nights a week, the Night Riviera is the United Kingdom’s other famous sleeper train. Run by Great Western Railway (GWR), it connects the busy platforms of London Paddington with the serene beaches and coastal towns of Cornwall, terminating in Penzance.
For travelers in 2026, the Night Riviera is a highly practical and slightly retro way to escape the city. While it doesn’t boast the luxury en-suites of the Caledonian Sleeper, it offers a cozy, efficient, and deeply romantic way to travel to the South West, saving you a long drive down the M4 and M5.

The Night Riviera features older but well-refurbished rolling stock. The atmosphere is distinctly relaxed and friendly.
Airline-Style Seating
The budget option. These are standard intercity train seats in a dedicated carriage. While they are significantly cheaper than a cabin, they do not recline into beds, making a full night’s sleep challenging. Seated passengers have access to a food counter for snacks but do not get access to the station lounges.
Single & Twin Cabins
The core sleeper experience. Cabins are compact and feature comfortable bunk beds, a washbasin with a tabletop, a wardrobe, and UK/USB charging points. The bottom bunk can be converted into a sofa if you want to sit up and read. Single cabins use the same room format with the top bunk folded away. Guests in cabins must use the shared toilets located at the end of the carriage (there are no en-suite showers on the train).
On-Board Lounge Bar
Open exclusively to cabin passengers, the lounge bar offers a fantastic place to relax before bed. You can purchase local Cornish beers, wines, and light snacks before retiring to your room.

Tip: If you are heading to Cornwall for a long holiday, check your large suitcases and surfboards into the Guard’s Van as soon as you board. Take only a small overnight bag to your cabin.

Is there a shower on the train?
No, there are no showers on the Night Riviera. However, if you book a sleeper cabin, you receive access to the station lounges at London Paddington and Penzance, both of which feature excellent, clean shower facilities.
Can I share a Twin Cabin with a stranger?
No. GWR does not sell individual beds in shared cabins. If you book a Twin Cabin, you must book it with your travel companion. If you are traveling alone, you must book a Single Cabin.
Are dogs allowed in the sleeper cabins?
Yes, dogs are allowed on the Night Riviera. You can bring your dog into your sleeper cabin, provided you pay a flat cleaning fee (usually around £30) when making the booking. Guide dogs travel free.
