American Pioneer 220 & Brightline (USA) Reviews & Ratings
Passenger rail in the United States is undergoing a massive renaissance, and Brightline is leading the charge. As the only private provider of modern intercity passenger rail in America, Brightline has completely transformed travel in Florida (connecting Miami, Orlando, and points between) with a premium, hospitality-first approach.
In 2026, the spotlight is fiercely on the future: Brightline West. Construction is fully underway to connect Las Vegas to Southern California by 2028. To power this route, Brightline has partnered with Siemens to manufacture the American Pioneer 220 (AP220)—the first true high-speed trainsets built on American soil, capable of reaching 220 mph.
Brightline at a Glance

Onboard Experience: What to Expect
Whether you are riding the current diesel-electric trains in Florida or looking forward to the AP220 high-speed trains in the West, Brightline operates on a hospitality model.
SMART (Economy Class)
Even the base class feels premium. SMART features hand-stitched leather seats, multiple power/USB outlets, and incredibly fast, free Starlink Wi-Fi. Food and alcoholic beverages are available for purchase from an at-seat trolley service.
PREMIUM (First Class)
PREMIUM is a door-to-door luxury experience. It includes access to the exclusive in-station PREMIUM Lounges (featuring complimentary hot food, charcuterie, and open bars). Onboard, passengers enjoy wider seats, complimentary meals, and free-flowing cocktails.
The Future: American Pioneer 220
For the upcoming Brightline West route, the AP220 trains (currently being manufactured in New York in 2026) will feature an ultrawide carbody, exceeding ADA accessibility requirements so wheelchairs can move freely between cars. The standout feature will be the “Party Car”—a first-of-its-kind lounge car allowing passengers to relax, grab a drink, and socialize while blasting through the desert at 200 mph.
Luggage Allowance & Policies
Brightline operates with airline-style baggage rules, meaning you must check larger bags.
| Service Level | Carry-On Allowance | Checked Baggage Policy |
| SMART Class | 2 carry-on bags + 1 personal item | Checked bags require a fee (Up to 50 lbs standard, or 70 lbs oversize) |
| PREMIUM Class | 2 carry-on bags + 1 personal item | 1 Free Checked Bag (Up to 50 lbs) |
Station Tip: All checked bags must be dropped at the Guest Service counter at least 30 minutes prior to departure to clear security. Unlike older Amtrak trains, you must pass your bags through airport-style scanners before boarding Brightline.
