California Zephyr Reviews & Ratings: Is It the Right Train for You?
Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful train trips in North America, Amtrak’s California Zephyr takes passengers on a stunning 51-hour journey from the plains of Chicago, through the towering peaks of the Rocky Mountains, across the Utah desert, and over the snow-capped Sierra Nevada to the San Francisco Bay Area.
For travelers in 2026, the Zephyr is a bucket-list adventure rather than a quick commute. Whether you opt for a budget-friendly Coach seat or a private Sleeper cabin, understanding how to navigate Amtrak’s multi-day amenities and baggage rules is the key to enjoying this spectacular cross-country odyssey.
California Zephyr at a Glance

Onboard Experience: What to Expect
The Zephyr utilizes double-decker Superliner cars, offering sweeping views of the changing American landscape—particularly from the floor-to-ceiling windows of the famous Sightseer Lounge.
Coach Class
Coach class on the Zephyr offers massive, forward-facing seats with deep recline, footrests, and more legroom than domestic first-class flights. Passengers have access to shared restrooms on the lower level. Coach passengers do not receive complimentary meals but can purchase food from the Cafe Car (located in the lower level of the Sightseer Lounge).
Roomettes (Sleeper Service)
A significant upgrade for a multi-day trip. Roomettes are compact private cabins for one or two people, featuring two seats facing each other that convert into upper and lower bunks at night. Passengers have access to a dedicated attendant and shared showers down the hall. Crucially, all Sleeper passengers receive complimentary “Traditional Dining”—hot, chef-prepared meals served in the Dining Car.
Bedrooms (Premium Sleeper Service)
The top-tier option. Bedrooms are twice the size of a Roomette and feature a sofa that converts into a larger lower bed, alongside an upper bunk. The major perk is a private, in-cabin enclosed toilet and shower. Like Roomettes, all Traditional Dining meals are included.
Luggage Allowance & Policies (Updated 2026)
Major 2026 Warning: While Amtrak’s baggage policy is famously generous, space in the Roomettes is extremely limited. Check your large bags so you don’t crowd your sleeping quarters.
| Luggage Size / Type | Policy | Cost |
| Carry-on Baggage | 2 personal items (max 25 lbs) + 2 carry-on bags (max 50 lbs) per person. | Free |
| Checked Luggage | Up to 2 checked bags (max 50 lbs / 23 kg each). Checked in prior to departure at staffed stations. | Free |
| Extra / Oversized Bags | Additional checked bags (up to 2 more) or oversized items (e.g., skis, bikes). | Fee Applies |
Tip: If you are booking a Roomette, check your large suitcases into the baggage car and only bring a small, soft-sided duffel bag for your clothing and toiletries on board.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About the California Zephyr
Can Coach passengers eat in the Dining Car?
Currently, Traditional Dining is exclusive to Sleeper car passengers. However, Amtrak occasionally allows Coach passengers to purchase meals in the Dining Car if space permits, though they mainly rely on the Cafe Car for hot dogs, pizzas, and snacks.
Can I get off the train and look around during stops?
The train makes several “fresh air” stops (like in Denver, Salt Lake City, and Reno) lasting 10 to 30 minutes, allowing passengers to step onto the platform. However, there is not enough time to leave the station and explore the cities.
Is there cell service on the train?
Cell service will frequently drop out, especially when winding through the remote canyons of the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. Download your movies, podcasts, and books before boarding.
