The Overland Reviews & Ratings: Is It the Right Train for You?

Operating for over 135 years, The Overland is an Australian rail institution. Also managed by Journey Beyond Rail, this service is vastly different from their luxury sleeper trains.

The Overland is a dedicated daylight transit service connecting Melbourne (Southern Cross Station) and Adelaide (Parklands Terminal). Taking roughly 10.5 hours, it offers a relaxing, scenic, and highly comfortable alternative to driving or flying between the two capital cities, rolling through beautiful country towns, the Murray River region, and the Adelaide Hills.

Onboard Experience: What to Expect

Because it is a daytime journey, there are no sleeping cabins on The Overland. Instead, it operates with airline-style seating, but with significantly more space and comfort.

Red Standard Service

Red Standard offers a comfortable, reclining seat in a 2-2 configuration with 60cm of legroom. Passengers have access to the licensed Café 828 carriage to purchase hot meals, snacks, barista coffee, and alcoholic beverages throughout the day.

Red Premium Service

For a relatively small upgrade fee, Red Premium is highly recommended. It offers a 2-1 seating configuration (meaning wider seats and no middle seats), a massive 67cm of legroom, and all-inclusive dining. Red Premium guests are served breakfast, a two-course lunch, and afternoon tea directly at their seats, alongside complimentary juices and soft drinks.

Luggage Allowance & Policies

The Overland is highly generous with luggage, making it perfect for travelers moving with heavy bags who wish to avoid airline overweight fees.

Service Level Cabin Luggage (Per Person) Checked Luggage (Luggage Van)
Red Standard 1 small carry-on bag (Up to 10kg) 2 pieces (Up to 20kg each)
Red Premium 1 small carry-on bag (Up to 10kg) 2 pieces (Up to 30kg each)

Bike Policy: You can bring a bicycle on The Overland! It must be pre-booked and checked into the luggage van for a nominal fee (usually $50 AUD).

Customer Service & Reliability

  • The Highs: It is a vastly more relaxing experience than a 1-hour flight. There is no TSA-style security line, no turbulence, and you have the freedom to get up, stretch your legs, and visit the café car whenever you like.
  • The Lows: It is a 10.5-hour journey. For business travelers in a rush, flying is infinitely faster. Additionally, The Overland only runs twice a week in each direction, so your travel dates must align with their schedule.
